Chill Sunday hike to the beach!
Last year, I was in Hong Kong to visit some of its famous tourist destinations (check it here). This time, I came back for a quick weekend getaway.
MacLehose Trail is one of the most famous trails in Hong Kong. It is a 10-section, 100-kilometer hiking trail covering the countryside. My friend and I just wanted to do a chill morning hike so we decided to take a part of MacLehose Section 2 Trail in Sai Kung.
How to get there
By Taxi: Take a cab from the city to Sai Wan Pavilion.
By public transportation: Take the MTR to Hang Hau Station (Tseung Kwan O Line). Take the public light bus to Sai Kung Pier. From there, walk to Chan Man Street and take the Village Bus 29R.
We chose to take the cab from Causeway Bay as it is more convenient. Taxi fare is at HKD300+.
The trail
The trail starts at the Sai Wan Pavilion.
From here, just follow the sign leading to Sai Wan Village.
Most of the trail are concrete stairs and pavement with minimal elevation.
From Sai Wan Village, you can opt to continue walking more or stop and get some snack and drinks from the stores along the way.
From Sai Wan Village, it is a 30-45 minutes hilly walk to reach the first beach.
We didn't stayed in this beach and opted to continue walking to reach the second beach - Ham Tin Wan beach.
The trail from the first beach to Ham Tin Wan beach is much more challenging than the first part of the hike. There is minimal coverage so the heat may be a bit exhausting especially during summer. We just continued the path and the stairs and some more minutes later, we were welcomed by this amazing view of the Ham Tin Wan beach.
From here, we walked all the way down the stairs and finally reached the beach front. We immediately tossed our hiking clothes and took a dip in the refreshing water.
It was so relaxing to chill in the beach after a sweating hike! I was so amazed because I didn't know there are nice beaches in Hong Kong. What I like about this beach is that there are only a few people around when we went here. Perfect for those finding a quick getaway from the busy city!
Notes:
- There are restaurants and stores near the beach where you can buy food.
- You can also rent tents from the stores in Sai Wan Village.
- If you don't want to walk back to the jump off point anymore, you can take a boat to Sai Kung Pier. Just ask the people in the stores about the boat schedule. Boat fare is around HKD130 per person.
