How to get there
We went there via private vehicle but here is a quick guide on how to commute to the jump-off point according to my research:
1. Take a bus from Cubao or Buendia that is bound to Batangas Pier. Travel time is around 1.5 to 2 hours.
2. Alight at the Batangas Grand Terminal.
3. Ride a jeepney going to Mabini ,Batangas. Tell the driver to drop you at Philpan Diving Resort, the jump off point of Gulugod-Baboy
The trail
Gulugod-Baboy is "pig's spine" in English. It is named so because of the contours of the hills that looks like the spine of a pig. The mountain was first explored by diving enthusiasts of Anilao looking for other outdoor activities. Soon, Gulugod Baboy became a famous sidetrip to Anilao diving resorts or Sumbrero Island.
To start off the trek, our group walked to the concrete road opposite Philpan. We were just starting but it felt like we were already assaulting because it's an uphill road going to the main jump-off point.
If there is one thing you have to prepare for in this trek, it's the assaults. From the starting point up to the peak, our group was challenged by the continuous ascend. But don't push yourself too hard. If you need to rest, go ahead. There are various resting stations where you can stop and take a few minutes to breathe and drink water.
Mt Gulugod Baboy is a quick hike. It took us less that 1.5 hours to reach the peak. We were welcomed by the stunning view, cool breeze and grassy summit.
After some rest, picture-taking and kulitan moments, our group decided to start descending. For our next stop, we decided to hire a boat that took us to Sombrero island. It is a small island but it is a famous side trip for hikers because of its white sand and clear waters.
Personally, I enjoyed this trip because I was able to do two of my favorite things in life in just a day --- mountaineering and beach bumming. Yay! :)

We are just a few minutes away from Mabini but never did I thought there's a mountain great for trekking in the area. Most people go to Mabini for diving! Hehe. Anyway, my cousins and I will plan our trek here. :)

ReplyDelete- Is the parking on Philpan big enough to accommodate many vehicles? How much is the parking fee?
- I'm a little concerned on the safety during the trip to Sombrero Island, did they provide you life vests?
Hi Kemp! Based on what I can remember, yup, there is enough space in the parking area to accommodate vehicles. Parking fee is PHP50.00.
