Let's go and explore Prague!
As a side trip of my Netherlands trip, I visited the beautiful city of Prague. Here's a short travel diary of my 4D3N trip!
How to get around
Prague has one of the best public transportation system in Europe. The metro, buses and trams can take you almost anywhere in the city in just a matter of minutes. Every time I travel, I walk as much as I can because for me it's the best way to explore a city. But in case you find yourself needing a way to go around Prague without the tiring walk, make sure that you are familiar with Prague's public transport system.
The public transport in Prague uses two single-trip tickets: a 30-minute ticket (24CZK) and a 90-minute ticket (32 CZK). You can buy them from this yellow ticket vending machine. These tickets can be used in any type of public transportation in the city within the valid duration (30/90 minute). Tip: Make sure to validate your ticket on the first form of transportation that you will use. No need to validate it on succeeding rides. If you get caught with invalidated and/or expired ticket, you will be penalized.
There are also short-term and long-term passes available if you need one.
Where to go and what to do
Take a free walking tour
Explore and learn the history of Prague from the locals themselves. I suggest that you do this on your first day in the city. You will surely get some tips from the walking tour that you can use for the rest of your stay. I availed the tour from Sandemans New Europe. Their guides are really humorous and accommodating.
Visit the Old Town Square
One of the main squares in Prague is the Old Town Square or StaromÄ›stské námÄ›stÃ. Its history dates back from the 12th century as a central market place of the city. It is surrounded by ancient buildings, magnificent churches and historic architecture. The Old Town Square is a lively and colorful place as it is always crowded with tourists, vendors, musicians and street performers.
At the center of the square is the Jan Hus monument. The statue was unveiled in 1915 to commemorate the death and martyrdom of Jan Hus. He is an influential figure and known church reformer during the 1400s.
Another interesting part of the square is the famous Astronomical clock. Do not miss to watch the procession of the Twelve Apostles on the hour. Every hour, a small door in the clock opens and Christ marches out with his apostles. At the same time, Death (skeleton figures) moves.
Try the TrdelnÃk
They say never leave Prague without trying their TrdelnÃk. They were right! This sweet pastry is so good you'll end up addicted!
Cross the Charles Bridge
Charles Bridge is a historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river. It was an important bridge before the 1840s as it is the only connection between Prague Castle and the city's old town. Nowadays, there are other bridges built to cross the river but Charles Bridge stays as a famous tourist attraction.
Tour around the Prague Castle
Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. The history of the castle started in 870. Nowadays, it is the official resident of the President of the Czech Republic. Personally, I was awed everywhere I looked around the castle. The architecture of the churches, palaces, halls and towers were very beautiful and intricate.
Take your OOTD at the John Lennon wall
This wall has been an iconic wall and representation of peace and love. The wall is vandalized with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and some lyrics of songs from the Beatles.
Take a walk around PetÅ™Ãn park
Located at PetÅ™Ãn hill, this park is a good place if you just want to chill, sit down and relax. Or if you want more physical activity, you can also walk up the hill and see the PetÅ™Ãn Lookout Tower which is a resemblance of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Take a look around Vyšehrad Castle
Another historic castle in Prague is the Vyšehrad castle which was built in the 10th century. Situated inside the castle is the Vyšehrad cemetery which contains the remains of famous Czech icons.
Take time to stop
I know you want to explore Prague as much as you can but don't forget to take time to stop and just appreciate the beauty and atmosphere of Prague. Everywhere is just captivating!
