Travel 2018: Malaysia

Malaysia, truly Asia!
Here is a quick re-cap of my two-day side trip in Malaysia from Singapore. Check my Singapore blog entries here:
Singapore Day 1 and 2: click here.
Singapore Day 3 and 4: check here.

From Singapore to Malaysia via Bus
I already booked my trip to Malaysia before the trip. I chose the bus option since it is way more affordable than taking the plane. I downloaded the RedBus app to check for available buses, their rates and schedule available.
I paid SGD30 for a one-way bus trip from Golden Mile Tower (Singapore) to Berjaya Times Square (Malaysia). Travel time took 5-6 hours and we had to go off the bus on two checkpoints along the way (Tuas Checkpoint and Malaysian Immigration Checkpoint).

Where to stay in Malaysia
Malaysia is way cheaper than Singapore in terms of accommodation. Since I traveled alone, I opted for a dormitory style hostel. I booked Sky Society via Booking.com. The hostel is located in a condominium type facility around 10 minutes away from KL Sentral. If you are looking for a hostel with a view, this is a good place for you.

Where to go around Kuala Lumpur
I only had two days in Malaysia so I didn't go out of Kuala Lumpur. Here are the places I explored around the area.

Batu Caves

One of the most famous tourist destination in Malaysia is the Batu Caves. It is a limestone hill with caves on top. One of the caves has a Hindu temple on top, most of which is under construction during my visit. Get your legs ready to climb the 272 steps going up the Hindu temple. It is a bit tiring especially during the day when it's extremely hot.
How to get there? From KL Sentral, take the KTM Komuter to Batu Caves.

Jamek Mosque
Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque, commonly known as the Jamek Mosque, is one of the first biggest mosques built in Kuala Lumpur. It dates back around 1909.
How to get there? Take the train and alight at the Masjid Jamek station. The mosque is just adjacent to the station exit.

Merdeka Square
Merdeka Square or the Independence Square is just in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The area was used before as a cricket field of the Royal Selangor Club.
How to get there? The square is just a few blocks away from the Masjid Jamek station.

River of Life
Check out this postcard ready Kuala Lumpur signage along the Klang River. River of Life is a government project to preserve the cleanliness of the river alongside the rapid development of the city.
How to get there? This is a few walks away from the Merdeka Square.

Petronas Twin Tower
Well, of course, a trip to Kuala Lumpur wouldn't be complete without taking a glimpse of the world famous Petronas Twin Towers. I love it especially at night when all the lights are lit up. It is such a beauty!
How to get there? Petronas is just a few steps away from Kuala Lumpur City Centre station.

SIDETRIP: Putrajaya
I had a few hours to spare before my flight back to Manila so I decided to go out of Kuala Lumpur and explore another part of Malaysia which is on the way to the airport.
Putrajaya is the federal administrative center of Malaysia. All the government ministries are located here.
Putra Mosque is the principal mosque in Putrajaya. This pink-domed mosque is definitely a sight!
Putra Bridge is the main bridge in Putrajaya connecting the Government Precint to the Mixed Development Precint.
Dataran Putra is a city square in the Precint 1 of Putrajaya. This 300-meter circular square has held important Malaysian festivals such as the Malaysian Independence Day parade.
How to get there? The fastest way to get to Putrajaya is via the KLIA Express Train from KL Sentral Station. Take off at the Cyberjaya & Putrajaya station. From there, take the bus to go to the different precints of Putrajaya.

That concludes my Singapore-Malaysia solo backpacking trip. Until next time! :)
