Travel 2019: Siem Reap, Cambodia

Ready for some temple run?

From Ho Chi Minh City, I headed to my next destination -- Siem Reap, Cambodia.

How to get there?
The cheapest way from HCMC to Siem Reap is via bus. The direct bus will take around 11 hours. I wanted to save some travel time so I took the quickest option which is via plane. I booked the flight from Cambodia Angkor Air (fare is around 86USD).

Where to stay?
Onederz Siem Reap is one of the coolest hostels I have ever been. It is a pretty large hostel with an on-site restaurant, a big lobby, tv area and swimming pool. They also offer affordable tour packages. No wonder Onederz is one of the most famous and best rated hostels in Siem Reap.

What to do?
Siem Reap is a small city surrounded by ancient ruins and temples including the world famous Angkor Wat. Going around is not a hassle especially since Onederz is situated in a good location. It is just a few meters away from the night market and pub street.

Angkor Wat Sunrise Tour
I availed the tour package from the hostel and joined the sunrise tour to Angkor Wat.
Angkor Wat is so mainstream but it is stunningly beautiful too. To watch how the sunrise reveals the perfectly symmetrical structure of the temple is such an experience!
After Angkor Wat, we also visited the Bayon Temple which is known for the many large faces carved around it.
Last but not the least is the Ta Phrom temple which is also known as the Tomb Raider temple. I personally liked this temple. The big roots of the trees intertwined with the temple's foundation is giving it a mysterious vibe.

Angkor Night Market
If you are looking for cheap souvenirs this is probably the best place to get them. From clothes to small items like key chains and jewelries, you can buy them here . You can even bargain if you're up for the challenge.

Pub Street
The liveliest street in Siem Reap at night is the Pub street. Cheap drinks and good music is the best way to end a tour day!
You can even get a massage after a wasted night!

Where to eat
Unlike in Vietnam, I didn't get to do a lot of food trip in Cambodia but here are my recos:

  • WILD Creative Bar and Eatery
  • Happy Pizza Siem Reap
  • La Pasta Italian Restaurant
  • Sister Srey Cafe
Travel Notes

  • Cambodia's currency is the Cambodian Riel. However, US dollars is widely accepted especially in the touristy areas so you can survive without exchanging your dollars with the local currency.
  • If you do not prefer to walk, you can go around Siem Reap via tuktuk.
  • Wear appropriate attire when touring around the temples. Revealing clothes are not allowed.
  • Filipinos can enter Cambodia visa-free!
